About

How care addresses pain at the back of the head

Occipital neuralgia can feel sharp, burning, aching, or sensitive near the back of the head. Symptoms may affect sleep, work, driving, exercise, or simple head movement. Our pain management physician looks at the full pattern instead of treating the pain location alone. The first visit connects your symptoms with your medical history and injury history. We also discuss medicines, prior care, neck symptoms, and the tasks that pain now limits. That information helps us choose a plan that fits your condition. Results vary because nerve pain has different causes and triggers. Our care may include medication management, physical rehabilitation guidance, injury-related pain care, or minimally invasive treatment when clinically appropriate. We focus on measurable changes such as fewer pain flares, better head and neck movement, improved sleep, and easier daily activity.

Process

Steps from symptom review to a treatment plan

1

Describe the pain pattern

We record where the pain starts, where it travels, what triggers it, and how it affects sleep and movement.

2

Review history and contributing factors

Our physician reviews injuries, neck symptoms, medicines, prior treatment, and relevant medical records to guide the assessment.

3

Set measurable care goals

We identify useful markers such as fewer flares, improved neck motion, better sleep, or easier daily tasks.

4

Choose appropriate treatment

The plan may include medication management, rehabilitation guidance, injury-related care, or a minimally invasive option when clinically appropriate.

5

Review progress and next steps

Follow-up care compares symptom changes and daily function, so we can adjust the plan when your response calls for it.

What to prepare before discussing head and neck pain

A few details can help us understand your symptoms and plan the visit.

  • Write down where the pain starts and where it travels.
  • Note movements, touch, sleep, or activities that worsen symptoms.
  • Bring a list of current medicines and prior pain treatments.
  • Bring relevant medical records or imaging reports if you have them.
  • Describe how pain affects work, driving, sleep, and daily movement.

Tracy checked me in. Tony triaged me and Dr Scott took care of me. They made me feel welcome and comfortable from start to finish. I don't think I've ever had a doctor's visit this WONDERFUL! I barely felt a thing and as a person who is terribly afraid of needles, they took all my fears away and provided an excellent experience. Tony plays your favorite music during the procedure and it lasts about one song. I cannot say enough good things about this place!!!

Questions about care for occipital neuralgia

Who provides occipital neuralgia treatment in Stockbridge?

Premier Injury Specialists provides occipital neuralgia treatment through physician-led pain management care. Our physician reviews the pain pattern, medical history, injury details, and daily limits. The plan may include medication management, rehabilitation guidance, injury-related pain care, or minimally invasive treatment when clinically appropriate. Patients from Stockbridge and nearby communities can request an evaluation during office hours.

What type of doctor treats occipital neuralgia?

A pain management physician evaluates occipital neuralgia and plans care for nerve-related pain. The assessment may include head and neck symptoms, injury history, current medicines, and movement limits. Our physician also considers whether rehabilitation guidance, medication management, or interventional care fits your condition. Results vary, so follow-up focuses on your symptoms and daily function.

What does the first visit include?

The first visit includes a focused review of your symptoms, medical history, injury details, medicines, and daily activity limits. Bring relevant records, imaging reports, and a medication list if available. We use your description of pain triggers and function to shape the treatment plan. The visit also gives you time to ask about risks, options, and follow-up.

What changes the cost of this treatment?

The cost depends on the evaluation, treatment type, medication needs, and follow-up care involved. A consultation can clarify which services fit your condition before any treatment plan moves forward. We discuss the recommended care and how to request a quote for your specific needs. No general amount applies to every patient.

Can injections help control occipital neuralgia symptoms?

Injections may be considered when a physician finds them clinically appropriate for the patient's symptoms and treatment goals. They are not the right choice for every pain pattern or medical history. Our team reviews the expected purpose, possible risks, other care options, and follow-up measures before planning an interventional treatment.

How do you measure whether treatment is helping?

Treatment progress is measured through symptom changes and improved daily function. We may discuss fewer pain flares, better sleep, easier head and neck movement, and greater tolerance for normal activities. Your report matters because pain intensity alone does not show the full result. Follow-up findings guide any needed change in the care plan.

Should I see pain management or another doctor for this pain?

A pain management physician is a suitable starting point when head and neck pain disrupts daily life or follows an injury. Our evaluation can guide treatment planning and identify when coordinated care is useful. We review records and symptoms before deciding whether another clinical professional should join the plan. Sudden severe symptoms require urgent medical attention.

When Customers Call Us About Occipital Neuralgia Treatment

1

Pain After A Neck Injury

Pain behind the head can begin after an auto accident, workplace injury, or sports injury. The injury history matters because neck strain and nerve irritation can overlap. Bring your records and describe the pain path, triggers, and daily limits so our physician can assess the pattern and discuss an individualized plan.

2

Scalp Sensitivity And Head Pain

Some patients notice burning pain or scalp tenderness along with pain at the back of the head. Those details help separate nerve-related symptoms from other sources of head pain. Write down when touch or neck movement makes symptoms worse, then discuss the pattern during a focused pain evaluation.

3

Pain That Limits Daily Movement

Repeated head pain can make sleep, work, driving, or exercise harder. The key question is how symptoms change your function, not only how strong the pain feels. Track the tasks you avoid and bring that information to the consultation, where we can set practical goals for follow-up.

Our Other Services

Knee Pain TreatmentKnee pain can interfere with stairs, walking, exercise, and work demands. A focused evaluation considers cartilage wear, arthritis, prior injury, and movement limits, then guides medication, therapy, or joint injection options.
Auto Accident Injury EvaluationAfter a crash, neck pain, back pain, or numbness can make daily tasks difficult. A clinical exam reviews collision injuries, range of motion, and nerve symptoms, then guides imaging referrals and treatment planning for a clearer recovery path.
Epidural Steroid InjectionsLeg or arm pain from an irritated spinal nerve can limit walking, lifting, or sleep. An epidural steroid injection places medication near the affected nerve root to calm inflammation and support movement during rehabilitation.
Facet Joint InjectionsArthritis in the small facet joints can cause painful, restricted neck or back movement. Facet joint injections deliver anesthetic and corticosteroid near the irritated joint, helping identify the pain source and improve everyday function.
Medial Branch BlocksBack or neck pain from facet joints may continue despite ordinary treatment. Medial branch blocks temporarily numb the nerves serving those joints, helping confirm the source and guide later radiofrequency ablation when appropriate.
Occipital Nerve BlocksPain at the back of the head can spread toward the scalp, eyes, or temples. An occipital nerve block targets irritated occipital nerves with local anesthetic and steroid, reducing headache symptoms and improving comfort.
