Medial branch blocks for focused spine pain decisions

Medial branch blocks help assess pain linked to the medial branch nerves near spinal facet joints. They may suit people with back or neck pain when a clinical exam supports facet-related pain.

The key buyer decision is fit. Our Pain Management Physician reviews your symptoms, injury history, examination findings, and available records before discussing treatment. A block isn't the right choice for every pain source, including some nerve root or muscle conditions.

After treatment, patients need useful feedback. A pain diary can record pain, movement, numbness, and daily activity. Activity testing then helps connect symptom changes with real tasks, such as walking, turning, or sitting.

  • Review the pain location and pattern before treatment.
  • Record changes in pain and movement after the block.
  • Ask which symptoms need prompt medical attention.
  • Discuss the next treatment decision after your follow-up review.

Service Overview

Medial branch blocks are targeted injections that numb small nerves linked to facet joint pain in the spine.

  • They differ from radiofrequency ablation because a block tests or calms nerve signals, while ablation uses heat to affect a nerve for longer-lasting relief in selected cases.
  • We provide this care for patients in Irondale and surrounding communities through our Stockbridge location.

“After the first diagnostic facet joint procedure, there must be a consistent positive response of at least 80% relief of primary (index) pain (with the duration of relief being consistent with the agent used)”

Process

How we guide your treatment from assessment to follow-up

1

Review symptoms and records

We discuss your pain pattern, injury history, examination findings, and available medical records.

2

Check treatment suitability

We decide whether the suspected facet-related pain pattern supports a medial branch block.

3

Explain the treatment plan

We review the procedure, expected sensations, temporary numbness, and activity guidance.

4

Track response after treatment

You record pain and movement changes in a pain diary, including activity testing when advised.

5

Discuss the next decision

We review your notes and response before discussing follow-up care or another treatment option.

How we approach treatment decisions

Physician-LED fit review

We review your symptoms, exam findings, and history before discussing a block. The service is the wrong fit when another pain source better explains your condition.

Clear aftercare guidance

Temporary numbness can affect movement and safety after treatment. We explain what activity to avoid, what to record, and when to ask for help.

Personalized injury planning

Patients recovering from auto accidents, workplace injuries, and sports injuries receive treatment planning based on their condition and daily goals.

I had a great experience at premier injury specialist after my car accident. From the moment I walked in, Tracy, the patient coordinator, made sure I understood the process and felt comfortable. Tony, the medical assistant, did an amazing job explaining the procedure in detail, which eased my nerves. Dr. Vyas thoroughly reviewed my MRI and took the time to explain my condition and treatment options. He was very honest and upfront about the procedure, making sure I truly needed the injection before administering it. His transparency and genuine care for my well-being reassured me that this office isn’t just in it for the money — they are truly invested in their patients’ health. I highly recommend this office to anyone in need of pain management. They provide exceptional care with professionalism and integrity.

The staff (Tracy) and the medical folks are very nice. They explain everything to you in plain language before you even get started, and once you see doctor (Dr Scott), the assistant (Areyana) is gentle & sweet. They both will walk you through the entire process verbally, as they go and they make sure you are good before you leave as well. Above & beyond when it comes to bedside manner. Just make sure you don't get lost in the Kroger parking lot, listening to GPS. The clinic is inside Arrowhead across the street, behind Subway.

The staff were super friendly and efficient with my back injections. They made me feel safe and I made a great connection with the receptionist. I was actually surprised by the low level of pain. I’ve had back injections before that were very painful, but these injections felt like a little pinch. Would definitely Recommend this facility.

Questions about recovery and treatment fit

What should I expect after medial branch blocks?

Injection soreness and temporary numbness can occur after medial branch blocks, and patients should follow the activity guidance they receive. Track pain, movement, and daily tasks in a pain diary. New weakness, fever, trouble breathing, or severe worsening pain needs prompt medical attention. Call the treating office for guidance if any symptom concerns you.

How does Premier Injury Specialists provide medial branch blocks?

Premier Injury Specialists provides medial branch blocks after a physician-led assessment supports the treatment. We review your pain pattern, history, examination findings, and available records. The plan includes procedure guidance, aftercare information, and follow-up discussion. Our team explains each step in plain language so you understand what to expect.

Which symptoms should I record after treatment?

Pain level, movement, numbness, weakness, and activity changes are useful symptoms to record. Note what happens during walking, sitting, turning, or other tasks that matter to you. A pain diary gives our physician a clearer view of your response and supports a more focused discussion at follow-up.

When should I ask about a medial branch block?

A medial branch block may fit when back or neck pain suggests facet-related nerve pain after an assessment. The treatment may not fit pain from a different source, such as some nerve root conditions. Bring your symptom history and medical records so we can discuss whether the procedure matches your condition.

Why might numbness affect activity after the procedure?

Temporary numbness can reduce normal sensation near the treated area, so activity guidance matters after the procedure. Protect the area and follow the instructions provided by the treating team. Ask before driving, exercising, or resuming demanding tasks if you aren't sure what is safe for you.

What does a pain management physician prescribe?

A pain management physician may discuss medication management when it fits the patient's condition and treatment plan. Medication is only one part of care, and it may be combined with rehabilitation guidance or interventional treatment. We review your history and current medicines before discussing any change.

Do I need a referral before requesting this care?

Referral needs depend on your health plan and clinical situation. Bring any referral, imaging, medication list, and injury records you already have. Our team can explain the information needed for an assessment and the next step for care in Irondale.
