What Is a Vertebral Disc?

A vertebral disc is a flexible cushion between the bones of the spine. Each disc has a tough outer ring and a softer center. The discs help the spine bend, move, and absorb pressure. A tear, bulge, or herniation can irritate nearby nerves and cause back pain or leg symptoms.

Key Takeaways About Vertebral Disc

  • Discs sit between the spine’s bones.
  • A damaged disc may irritate a nearby nerve.
  • A disc bulge is not always a herniation.

How Vertebral Disc Works

Vertebral Disc

A vertebral disc sits between two spine bones and helps spread pressure during movement. Its firm outer ring surrounds a softer inner center. This design lets the spine bend while the disc absorbs some force.

Related glossary terms: Disc Bulge, Annular Tear, Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Disc problems can develop when the outer ring weakens or tears. The inner material may push outward, which is called a herniation. A bulging disc extends beyond its usual border but may not involve a tear. Doctors connect disc findings with symptoms, physical exam results, and imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging.

Disc symptoms

  • A disc problem may cause back or neck pain.
  • Nerve irritation may cause pain, tingling, or weakness in an arm or leg.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we assess a vertebral disc problem, we compare reported symptoms with the physical examination and available imaging. Our team also checks whether symptoms follow a nerve pattern, because an imaging finding may not explain every source of pain.

Vertebral Disc in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with a lower back injury may have a herniated vertebral disc that irritates a nearby nerve. Herniated Disc Treatment may address the disc-related pain after the clinical findings and imaging are reviewed together.
