What Is an Annular Tear?

An annular tear is a small split in the tough outer ring of a spinal disc. The tear can let disc material press outward or irritate nearby nerves. It may appear in the neck or lower back and can occur with disc wear, injury, or sudden strain.

Key Takeaways About Annular Tear

  • The tear affects the disc’s outer ring.
  • MRI may show the tear and nearby disc changes.
  • An annular tear isn’t the same as a disc herniation.

How Annular Tear Works

Annular tear describes damage to the outer ring of a spinal disc. This ring contains the softer center of the disc. A tear can create local inflammation and may allow the center to push outward.

A clinician may review symptoms, movement, strength, and imaging together. Magnetic Resonance Imaging can show disc structure, nearby nerve pressure, and related changes. An annular tear may cause back or neck pain, but the scan alone does not prove that the tear causes every symptom.

An annular tear and a herniated disc describe related but different findings. A tear can exist without major disc material moving outward. A herniation involves disc material extending through a damaged outer ring.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we review an annular tear, we compare the imaging finding with the person’s pain pattern, movement limits, and nerve symptoms. Our team also checks whether a disc bulge or herniation appears nearby. That review helps us connect the scan with the goals of Herniated Disc Treatment.

Annular Tear in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person develops lower back pain after lifting and has pain that travels into the leg. An MRI shows an annular tear near a disc change, so the clinical review considers both the disc finding and the nerve pattern.
