What Is Spondylosis?

Spondylosis is age-related wear in the spine that affects the discs, joints, and nearby bone. The changes may include disc thinning, bone spurs, or narrowed spaces around spinal nerves. Spondylosis can occur in the neck or lower back, and it may cause pain, stiffness, numbness, or no symptoms.

Key Takeaways About Spondylosis

  • Spondylosis involves wear in spinal discs, joints, or bone.
  • Imaging changes don't always explain a person's pain.
  • Spondylosis isn't the same as a herniated disc.

How Spondylosis Works

Spondylosis

Spondylosis develops as spinal discs lose some height and flexibility. The small joints between the vertebrae may also become irritated. The body can form extra bone, called a bone spur, near worn areas.

Doctors assess the condition through your symptoms, physical examination, and imaging when needed. An X-Ray can show changes in bone and joint shape. Magnetic Resonance Imaging can show discs, nerves, and other soft tissues. These findings help connect spinal changes with your pain pattern.

Spondylosis may affect the neck or lower back. Pain can stay near the spine, or irritation near a nerve can cause symptoms that travel into an arm or leg.

Spondylosis

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we review spondylosis, we connect imaging findings with the person's symptoms and examination. We check whether pain stays near the spine or follows a nerve pattern. Our team also considers the affected spinal level when discussing Degenerative Disc Disease Treatment.

Spondylosis in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with lower back stiffness may have spondylosis on an imaging report. If the person also has leg pain or tingling, the care team checks whether a nearby nerve is irritated.
