What Is Chronic Pain?

Chronic Pain is ongoing or recurring pain that continues after an injury should have healed or develops without a clear injury. It may come from tissue damage, nerve changes, inflammation, or changes in how the nervous system processes signals. The pain can affect sleep, movement, work, mood, and daily activities.

How Chronic Pain Works

Chronic Pain can involve signals from muscles, joints, nerves, or internal organs. The nervous system may also become more sensitive after repeated pain signals. This can make normal touch or movement feel painful.

Related glossary terms: Neuropathic Pain, Nociceptive Pain, Central Sensitization.

Clinicians look at the pain's location, quality, pattern, triggers, and effect on daily activities. A headache history may show links with light, sleep, stress, neck tension, or other symptoms. A Pain Journal can help record these patterns. A physical examination and selected tests can help identify related conditions.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

We also review headache features, triggers, related symptoms, medication use, and daily limits. Our team uses that pattern to guide the clinical evaluation and document the condition clearly.
