What Is Weakness?
Weakness is reduced muscle strength that makes a movement harder to perform or control. It can affect one limb, several muscle groups, or a specific action, such as lifting the foot. In lumbar radiculopathy, weakness may occur when a spinal nerve becomes irritated or compressed and cannot signal nearby muscles normally.

Key Takeaways About Weakness
- Weakness reduces strength, not just comfort.
- Nerve-related weakness may affect a specific movement.
- Weakness isn't the same as pain or numbness.
How Weakness Works

Weakness affects how much force a muscle can produce during a movement. A person may have trouble lifting the foot, standing from a chair, or holding an object. The change may be mild, steady, or linked to a certain position.
Related glossary terms: Nerve Root, Dermatome, Paresthesia.
A clinical exam checks movement against resistance and compares one side with the other. The pattern can help show whether a nerve, muscle, or joint is involved. In lumbar radiculopathy, a clinician may compare weakness with pain, tingling, and the area served by the affected nerve root.
Weakness can differ from tiredness. Tired muscles may recover after rest, while nerve-related weakness can remain during a specific task.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team
When we assess weakness, we ask which movements have changed and when the change began. We compare strength from side to side and review related symptoms, such as radiating pain or altered sensation. Our team connects these findings with the rest of the lumbar radiculopathy exam before planning care.
Weakness in Practice: A Real-World Example
A person with lumbar radiculopathy may notice that one foot feels weak when climbing stairs. The person may also report back pain that travels down the same leg.
